The Origins of the Constellations ~ Norman Walker: Eastbourne AS

The talk tries to put into both geological and cultural time scales just where and when our culture developed the images and mythology which we associate with the ‘patterns in the sky’. Many other cultures have adopted different images and so this talk deals predominantly with what one might call ‘the Western Images’. Many of the myths contain cultural references which we can recognise as originating in ‘middle eastern’ societies a few thousand years ago. However, I try to show that some of the mythology might have a lot longer history than that which pertains to those societies.
