Cosmic Backgrounds ~ Dr Tony Baxter: The term “background” is used at times rather loosely in astronomy in relation to a diffuse continuum, unresolved objects, or sources too numerous and similar to essentially look the same in any direction. The description has also evolved with the impact of modern observations. The talk is based on the developments in the last half century, to indicate the nature of some of the radiations that are observed. In particular, the Author will contrast his experience with high energy cosmic ray and X-ray astronomical measurements in the 1960’s with today’s observations and understanding.
